MR LOMBARDI.

MR LOMBARDI

24 May 2015. Milan-The Real Athlete. Owner-J N Swinbank.

Mr Lombardi is a recent acquisition to the yard, having raced eight times in Ireland to date, as a four, and five year old, for the yard of Mouse Morris. He is out of an unraced Presenting mare, who has produced five runners to date, including the classy full brother 'Real Milan,' who recorded a BHA best rating of 140 over fences back in 2013 when trained by Donald McCain. His sire Milan won the 2001 St Ledger, and is a renowned source for producing high class National Hunt horses.

Mr Lombardi was sent off at 66/1 for his debut at Cork, in a maiden hurdle in November 2019, over two miles, and duly finished well down the field. He was back at Cork three weeks later, but failed to complete, puling up before three out. In January 2020 he was switched to bumper company, in a first time hood, for his third start. He led the field, until weakening quickly from five furlongs out.

After a near seven month break, which included the lock down of racing, he reappeared in first time blinkers in maiden hurdle company at Cork, over two and a half miles. He probably was a bit too keen as he went clear of the field, he was under pressure three out, but to his credit ran all the way to the line, to finish third, beaten by three lengths, for which he received a Racing Post rating of 112. He reappeared 12 days later at Sligo, and once again he made the running, only giving best from after the last. That race saw him step up to three miles, and maybe using too much energy too soon could have sapped his stamina. He was back on the track only nine days later at Tramore, stepping back down to two and a half miles, but he was never travelling, and came home in his own time. His final start for the Morris yard was his chase debut at Wexford, only 13 days later over three miles and one furlong, in first time cheek pieces. After a couple of early mistakes he became detached, and was pulled up before four out.

Mr Lombardi has had a much needed good long break, and has three entries in the coming week. He obviously has talent, and we shall be doing every thing we can to help him reach his full potential.
