Sheffield born Joe is our senior jockey and has been with us since 2008, having briefly worked for Ian Williams after completing his NRC course.
He rode his first winner in January 2011 aboard San Deng in a handicap hurdle at Catterick and went on to ride 25 winners in his first four seasons, including his first chase success on Alderbrook Lad, also at Catterick, on New Year's Day in 2014.
Joe learned his trade riding our horses around the northern tracks and enjoyed early success on plenty of yard favourites, including Rosairlie, Dawn Ride, Gonow and Danceintothelight, and he struck up a great partnership with popular veteran Master Of The Hall, winning three handicap hurdles on the gelding during 2014.
Joe's association with our high class chaser Just Cameron took him to the 2015 Punchestown Festival, where the pair took second place behind top class two miler Un De Sceaux in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase, and they went on to finish an honourable sixth to Sprinter Sacre in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the following year's Cheltenham Festival.
He rode his first ever double at Cartmel's May bank holiday fixture in 2015 and went on to finish that season with a career best total of 26 winners.
Joe rode out his claim in January 2017 with a win on Major Ridge in a handicap chase at Catterick and as one of the leading jumps jockeys based in the area, he regularly rides for some of our neighbouring trainers, he's twice partnered Simon West's high class Maximiser at Auteuil and finished a close second on Jedd O'Keeffe's Sam Spinner in the Grade 3 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle at Chepstow in 2017.
In his spare time, Joe goes running with his dog Bella, watches racing and goes to the gym to keep fit. An extremely keen all-round horseman, Joe has been a first team member of the Great Britain Horseball squad and he aspires to be a top National Hunt jockey.
“I've learnt my trade from a former top class jockey and a brilliant trainer," says Joe. “I fully appreciate all the support, and criticism, that I get from the boss and I'm extremely grateful to all the owners for their continued support.
"We have a great team here and I enjoy the laughs and banter that goes on, no matter how good or bad things are."
Joe was also voted Hexham’s best looking jockey of 2014.
