The King’s Steed reigns at Ayr
The testing conditions at Ayr today held no fears for The King’s Steed (25/1), as he finally took advantage of his slipping mark to record the first win of his career in division two of the mile handicap under a strong ride from Barry McHugh.
The King’s Steed (Charlie) and Lauren Steade in action at York last year (thanks to Paul Steade)
The four year old son of Equiano, owned by The Charlie Partners, was having his 21st racecourse outing and his previous best efforts were a couple of third places for Ralph Beckett early last year, we’ve struggled to find the key to him but his last couple of Flat runs had suggested that the penny was starting to drop and today was his day at last!
Despite the low grade status of the race, The King’s Steed was running from out of the handicap but he appreciated being up with the pace and battled on very gamely at the business end, getting back up to win by a short head after briefly looking likely to be denied by the favourite, Green Howard.
Hopefully he’s capable of building on this, he was rated as high as 69 last spring so there may well be more to come from him in these sort of conditions over the coming weeks!
