Middleham Training Centre

Oakwood Stables, home to Micky Hammond Racing, is situated in historic Middleham.

Middleham has a long history in racing, being the site of a now defunct racecourse which was in use from as early as 1739, and its subsequent development as a famous racehorse training centre (Isaac Cape was the first professional trainer to base himself in Middleham in 1765). Racing people found that the peat-based turf on Middleham’s famous “Low Moor” and “High Moor” is ideal for exercising horses and extending their capabilities without risk of injury, and so it attracted horses to be trained here as the sport developed through the centuries.

Middleham High Moor - the former racecourseToday there are more than a dozen trainers in and immediately around Middleham, with a combined total of about 800 horses in training. They all benefit from the facilities provided by the Middleham Gallops management team, including the grass and all-weather gallops on both the High and Low moors, and the various facilities for schooling jumping and starting stalls entry.

Things to do in and around Middleham
Of course, as well as this tremendous training centre, a visit to Middleham can pack in so much more. Here are some of the other activities you can add to a visit to Micky Hammond Racing.

The area is ideal for shooting and fishing, including grouse shooting which takes place on the higher moors during the season. It is also a spectacular area for walking, wildlife and photography, having beautiful natural scenery on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales.

However, there are some specific attractions which people regularly visit for other reasons.
