Our Team - The Jockeys

Jumps
Since Neil Mulholland left to become a trainer, we have not retained a stable jump jockey. With up to 30 jumpers in training this winter, it is important that we have a good pool of available jockeys. Barry Keniry will ride most of our runners, but is currently injured. Wilson Renwick also picks up rides. Graham Lee, one of the leading jump jockeys, is now Ferdy Murphy’s stable jockey and has been associated with Micky Hammond runners for several years. He will ride for us when available this winter. In Barry’s absence, Fearghal Davis has been riding regularly for the stable.

Graham Lee
Graham LeeGraham is one of the top jump jockeys around, riding around 100 winners a season for the last 3 years. He first really came to prominence in 2003/04 when he rode a 55,000/1 four-timer at Wetherby on Charlie Hall Chase day in November 2003, which included big race winner Ballybough Rasher. Later that season, he hit the big time, winning an emotional Grand National for Ginger McCain aboard Amberleigh House. He has since ridden a hat-trick at the Cheltenham Festival in 2005. He left Howard Johnson to become stable jockey to Ferdy Murphy here in Middleham. Graham has ridden over 20 winners for our stable, including 9 from just 13 rides in 2004

Barry Keniry
Barry KeniryBarry is a talented jockey who started his career in the South, challenging for the conditional jockeys’ title in 2001/02. In that season, he hit the big time with a high profile victory on Rob Leach for Gary Moore in the William Hill Hurdle at Sandown, fighting off no less than AP McCoy up the hill. Since he lost his claim, Barry has been based in the North and regularly rides for Patrick Haslam and George Moore as well as other Middleham trainers. He has had over 100 winners in the last 5 seasons, including 13 for us. He is a regular part of the training regime through his involvement of the schooling of young horses. Currently out injured with a broken leg. Should be back in early spring

Wilson Renwick
Wilson RenwickWilson has been one of the best known jockeys on the jumps scene in the North. He graduated from the Northern Racing College and has ridden over 80 winners in the last 5 seasons, mostly around the Scottish and North of England tracks. He was stable jockey for Peter Monteith for a couple of years, and also has a good record for Howard Johnson. Now based around Middleham, Wilson’s excellent horsemanship attracts rides from many of the local stables, but he now rides mostly for Brendan Powell in the South. He occasionally rides work for us, and picks up a few of our jump rides. In the last 5 seasons, he has ridden 9 winners for the stable, including an absolute peach of a front-running ride on Rimsky Korsakov at Wetherby in 2008.

Flat
Jumping is our main focus, but we do have a good success rate on the flat as well. In 2007 and 2008, we had 10 winners, and 6 in 2009. We don’t retain a flat jockey, but our policy is to use the very best available at the time each of our horses is declared to run, including Paul Hannagan, Greg Fairley, and Jamie Spencer
