Buying Your Horse

There are two main ways to purchase your horse:-

• Instructing your trainer to “Buy a horse to order” (from one of the main racehorse sales which take place during the year)
  
  or
   
• Purchase an unsold (or part unsold) horse in a trainer’s yard

At Micky Hammond Racing, we can help with either route.

Buying a horse to order
Micky Hammond has good experience of buying horses for owners of all levels at the Sales. He has a good eye for a horse, and has made notable purchases for owners big and small in the past. Click here to read a little from our background on Micky Hammond.

You or your partnership would come and discuss your requirements with Micky, and he would then search for options at the Sales for you, acting on your behalf to acquire the horse. Considerations would be:-

• Would you like a flat horse or a jumper?
• Do you want to buy an unraced horse so that you can name it yourself?
• Are you looking to stick with a horse over a few years, or to change to a new one each season? (This would affect the type of horse recommended to you)
• If it’s a flat horse you’d like, do you want a stayer or a sprinter? If it’s a jumper, are you looking for a chaser or hurdler?

Purchase an unsold (or part unsold) horse at the trainer’s yard
Obviously, this provides you with less choice, and the horses are likely to have already been named. These are important considerations, but often horses are considerably cheaper to purchase as a result of this.

As the horses are already in the yard, they are likely to be fit and ready to run, and so if you’re keen to have some immediate involvement at the racetrack after your purchase, then this could be a better route than instructing your trainer to buy to order.
