Oakwood Stables and Sharp Hill Farm

Oakwood Stables is located on the eastern edge of Middleham, we are one of fifteen training establishments in the town and we have access to the most amazing, beautiful training facilities. Our main yard itself has 45 spacious boxes together with a five-horse walker and sand pen; we also have our own horseboxes and access to a large nearby paddock.

We currently have over 90 horses in training and we’ve recently taken some extra stabling at Sharp Hill Farm, which is around half a mile from Oakwood on the other side of the village. The new accommodation consists of an additional sixteen boxes plus a refurbished barn and is located in a peaceful countryside setting with easy access to the Low Moor gallops.

Sharp Hill Farm

Middleham’s famous Low Moor gallops are five minutes away from our main yard on horseback; first thing each morning we take our horses up to the moor to exercise them in the bracing North Yorkshire air. Middleham Moor has been associated with the training of racehorses for over 250 years and race meetings were held on the High Moor between 1739 and 1873.

The High Moor now boasts a mile and a quarter all-weather gallop and turf gallops while the Low Moor has two slightly uphill polytrack gallops, one of three furlongs and one of seven furlongs, together with turf gallops; there are gallops to suit the requirements of every racehorse and prepare them perfectly for their big day at the races. The moor boasts amazing views over Wensleydale and the River Ure and the ever-changing weather makes for a most spectacular setting.

P1270163Also on the Low Moor is a jumps schooling ground where horses can be gently introduced to tackling obstacles roughly the size of the French-style hurdles you see at Southwell or Haydock, and we also have access to a fully functional set of starting stalls, such a crucial part of a young Flat racer’s education.

The town of Middleham is entirely sympathetic to the sport of racing and you will always find traffic giving way to horses; as with every training establishment our horses are our lives, we treat them like royalty and they have living standards second to none; here at Micky Hammond Racing we also pride ourselves in being such a friendly and welcoming yard, a quality we think rubs off on our horses too, if you don’t believe us, give us a try!
